Railay/Krabi
Railay/Krabi
<William> Currently we're in Krabi (where they filmed the James Bond film 'Man with the Golden Gun') after having spent a week or so in the resort of Koi Samui and visiting the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangnan.
We'd been doing a lot of travelling and we needed a break so we did pretty much nothing in Koi Samui. Just sat in the hotel, sat on the beach, watched pirated movies, some of which were done with someone taking a camcorder into the cinema so you get two lots of people coughing and rustling sweet wrappers. The island looked as if it was probably a pretty nice place, but we didn't see much of it!
We also went to the full moon party on Had Rin beach which was wicked. We arrived in style in a massive speedboat and then had a look around to get a feel for the place. There's lots of different stages playing all sorts of music all down the beach (which is pretty wide) from techno, house, etc to drum & bass. The beach is in a secluded cove and is only about 1km long with a huge light canon on one side beaming right the way across the beach. There's a really amazing atmosphere with the fresh sea air and mix of people from all around the world - quite unlike any club you could ever go to. Normally you stay till dawn to see the sun rise, but it started raining (and wouldn't stop) and they started playing school-disco quality music so we headed off around 5am.
We're now in Railay beach which is a tiny resort in the Krabi area. There are three beaches on the three sides on a peninsular which, although part of the mainland, is only accessible by boat. We're surrounded by massive limestone cliffs with huge stalactites & stalacmites and the occasional cave. There are hundreds of islands in the area, many with small secluded beaches with no houses there, so you can swim/boat across to them and lie on the beach undisturbed. The water is great for swimming too, really clear (turquiose colour) with coral reefs and lots of little fish everywhere. No strong currents or waves so you can swim across to other islands easily. We like it so much we've decided to scrap going to the other islands and just stay here as long as we can! It'll take a couple of days to get to Singapore for our flight out on the 28th and we'll hopefully see Kuala Lumpur on the way down.
